Carnations are back in favour — and rightly so. Their strong red against the matte black of the box looks noble, a little in defiance of the trends that told us to forget them. We arrange them densely, petal against petal, until they form a compact, velvety sheet of colour. There is no need to move them to a vase; the flowers draw water from foam hidden in the box and can outlast many a bouquet. A gift for people with character — the kind who value the classics but aren't afraid of bold pairings.
