There is something watercolour-like about alstroemeria — the fine strokes on its petals look as if someone painted them on with a thin brush. Gathered into a bunch, the stems fall loosely and without stiffness, and since each one carries several flowers at once, the arrangement feels fuller than the stem count suggests. In the language of flowers, alstroemeria speaks of friendship and loyalty, which is why you so often choose it for someone who has simply been there, year after year. It also lasts surprisingly long in the vase, patiently opening bud after bud. A lovely choice when you want to give something delicate that will not disappear after three days.
