For a new baby, a First Communion or a birthday, it's hard to find a sweeter set: pink and white carnations in a blue box, with a plush pink elephant tied on with ribbon. The flowers delight the mum, the toy delights the child, and the whole thing looks so tender it feels a shame to separate them. Carnations are among the longest-lasting cut flowers; set in soaked foam, they need no vase and stay fresh surprisingly long, in the little one's room or in the living room. The small elephant stays on for years afterwards — a keepsake of the day when it all began.
